What causes a stress fracture?
- Practicing incorrect training or sport technique
- Doing repetitive activity in high-impact sports such as basketball, tennis, dance, gymnastics.
- Wearing improper footwear
- Low vitamin D level
- Medical conditions
- Overweight
- Aging
What are symptoms of a stress fracture?
- Pain or swelling
- Aching
- Tenderness of the bone
- Pain after starting and during any activities
Diagnosis:
- Physical examination by preferred examination
- Xray
- MRI
Treatment:
- Stop any activities that are causing the pain
- Apply ice to sensitive area
- Moderate amount of rest (up to 6 weeks)
- Wrap and cast the affected foot and ankle
- Physical therapy is recommended
- Prescribe anti-inflammatory medication
- Adjust position of leg (elevate position) to help reduce swelling and pain
- Begin using protective footwear to reduce swelling
- Begin using crutches to keep weight off the affected area
