What causes foot uclcers?
Paitents using insulin are at higher risk of getting these kinds of wounds. Being overweight and substance abuse can increase the development of the foot ulcers and prolong healing too.
Ulcers form due to the lack of feeling in the foot, poor circulation, foot deformities, irritation (friction or pressure), and trauma, as well as duration of diabetes.
Common symptoms?
- Redness
- Swelling
- Drainage from wound
- Odor, if progessed significantly
Diagnosis & Treatment:
- Examination by preferred podiatrist
- Initiate prevention of infection
- Take pressure off from affected area
- Taking off dead skin from wound (debridement)
- Apply medication or dressing to ulcer
- Manage blood sugar and other health conditions
- May prescribe antibiotics to help heal the wound
